The Daddy of our 4 International Gay fetish museums has just launched a Funding campaign & would love your kinkster help. The LA&M is the number one home of our gay fetish history and it hosts the most celebrated memorabilia from our plus pieces from all the great trailblazers who fought and won our LBGTQ+ rights we enjoy today.
The Leather Archives & Museum is located in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois, United States. It was founded by fetish legends Chuck Renslow and Tony DeBlase in 1991….. “As a community archives, library, and museum of Leather, kink, fetish, and BDSM history and culture.” Its mission statement reads, “Making leather, kink, BDSM, and fetish accessible through research, preservation, education and community engagement.” In addition to activities in Chicago, the LA&M sends “traveling” exhibits around the World, and provides email and telephone research assistance” not least for this magazine.
The permanent exhibits at the LA&M include the Fakir Musafar exhibit, the Dungeon exhibit (which shows some of the museum’s artifacts in an erotic environment), the Leatherbar exhibit, and the ‘A Room of Her Own’ exhibit (about women’s leather history). It is traditionally funded largely by a trust set up in 2009 from profits made at the Annual International Mr Leather Event weekend (IML) plus other notable donations. Due to the pandemic IML 42 in 2020 was cancelled and this year’s May event has been pushed back to November 2021 which of course (like many charitable organisations during Covid) has left a big gap in LA&M finances over the last 18 months plus visitor numbers have largely evaporated.
WHERE YOUR HELP IS NEEDED
The LA&M team said this week “It’s the 30th anniversary of Leather Archives and Museum, and the 21st year in our building on Greenview Ave, a former Synagogue that now provides sanctuary to our collected history. The exterior is showing its age and needs a little love! Funds raised will go towards cleaning and landscaping to make our home shine! Generous volunteers are available to do the work, so your donations will go towards buying soil, plants, flowers and cleaning tools. ‘The work is underway, and by the end of May we will hopefully be sexy on the outside and sultry on the inside. Or vice versa!”
THE FETISH COMMUNITY JUST NEED TO RAISE $2000 AND WE KNOW THAT GENEROUS AT READERS WILL WANT TO DO THEIR BIT

The LA&M is open to those 18 years old or above due to the adult nature of some of its contents and it was inducted into the Leather Hall of Fame in 2019 at that year’s CLAW.
If you are interested in our Leather/Kink/Queer history and are not in North America any time soon you have 3 other great sources all of which like the LA&M have been covered previously by AT and all the info you need is still available at www.Alphatribe.com. They are The Canadian Lesbian & Gay Archives in Toronto; The European Leather Archive in Bishopsgate, London and the Gay Museum Archive in the queer Capital of Australia, Melbourne.
