With a vaccine on the way we can start thinking of traveling again. Will Stone shares one of his favourite places with you: Fort Lauderdale.
In 1960, Connie Francis sang “Where the Boys Are”, the title song to her movie about spring-breakers in Fort Lauderdale. Immediately, all of America knew that Fort Lauderdale was the place to go for spring break. It started a spring break boom for Fort Lauderdale that lasted three decades. I even spent my spring break ’85 in “Fort La Dee Dah” with my fraternity brothers. What America didn’t know was that during those same decades, Fort Lauderdale was becoming a resort town for a different type of boys—the kind of boys who made out with each other while Connie sang.
By the late ‘80s, the locals had had enough of the hundreds of thousands of hard-partying college kids and drove them out of town. This opened all of Fort Lauderdale to the more discreet homos. But gay Fort Lauderdale wasn’t ready for its day in the sun just yet.
In the ‘90s, South Beach—about an hour away at the southern tip of Miami Beach—was the place that gay boys flocked to from around the country and beyond. Big gay nightclubs flourished along the South Beach strip. I glammed it up myself for a week in South Beach in ’98 with my best friend. But South Beach glittered too brightly. The straights moved in and took over around the turn of the millennium. Finally, the time had come for gay Fort Lauderdale to sizzle.
Fort Lauderdale is now one of the gayest spots on the East Coast. And the gayest daytime spot in Fort Lauderdale is Sebastian Street Beach. I even got my cock sucked in the water by a flight attendant there in ’07. You can stay at the beach at one of the many gay resorts. Cheston House, the Grand Resort and Spa, and the Worthington are all clothing-optional resorts at the beach. For something closer to the nightlife, Cabanas Guesthouse and Spa, Calypso Inn, Ed Lugo Resort, and Manor Inn are all clothing-optional spots in nearby Wilton Manors. If clothing-optional is too vanilla for you, look no further than Inn Leather. Every room has a sling.
Speaking of leather, a stop by LeatherWerks is obligatory for every visiting fetish pig. Legendary outfitters Stompers Boots (formerly of San Francisco) is right next door. For something beachy, browse Ball Beachwear in Wilton Manors. At night, you can shop at LeatherWerks’ outlet inside the Ramrod. The Ramrod itself is one of handful of American leather bars that’s still going as strong as ever. But the Ramrod got some new competition when the Eagle Wilton Manors opened for business just up the street. Can Fort Lauderdale support two leather bars? I sure as fuck hope so!
Did I say “fuck”? That’s just what you can do at Fort Lauderdale’s hopping bathhouses. The Clubhouse II, near Wilton Manors, has weekly leather nights and bear nights. You can take in some good clean fun at Club Fort Lauderdale, near downtown FTL. Sadly, my good buddy, porn super-bear Steve Sommers, tells me that fetishy sex club 321 Slammer has permanently closed. It’s a huge loss. I had the good fortune of blowing some loads there in the past. I hear locals are holding out hope that a new temple of cum will open in its location when the pandemic blows over. Let us pray.
One time each year when you don’t need a bathhouse or sex club to get laid early and often is Pig Week. It’s the piggiest week of the year. It doesn’t matter if you’re a leather pig, a rubber pig, a piss pig, or whatever the fuck you are. You’ll find what you crave at this annual late November fuckfest. You can prove that you’re the biggest pig by far if you win the Gang Bang Lottery. The lucky winner gets fucked by the hottest porn stars on hand. Once the pro studs are done, every guy on site can line up to pound away at the winner’s hole. Where do I sign up?!
For something slightly tamer, the Leather Masked Ball takes place every year right before Pig Week begins. South Florida’s leather society turns out in their best and/or sluttiest for this annual fundraiser dance and charity event. So show up, do some good, then get ready for a week of pigging out.
If you feel like dancing but can’t wait till the fall, head to Hunters Nightclubs for T Dance on Sundays where you can bump and grind with the hunks that show up every week. You might like Hunters’ Fur Friday Happy Hour too. If plaid shirts and cowboy boots are your thing, you might opt for Scandals Saloon’s Famous Sunday Tea Dance instead of Hunters. Or do like the locals and start and Scandals then head to Hunters.
Fort Lauderdale. It’s where the pigs are…and some pig waits for you.
