‘Boys in the Sand’ was the first gay porn film to include credits. It achieved crossover success when it was reviewed in the mainstream press. It was released after Andy Warhol’s (straight) 1969 film ‘Blue Movie’ and preceded the legendary ‘Deep Throat’ by nearly a year. Boys in the Sand was promoted with an advertising campaign, unprecedented for a pornographic feature. It premiered in New York City in 1971 and was an immediate critical and commercial success. The film cost US$8,000 to make. Directed by Wakefield Poole, it starred Casey Donovan and was filmed on Fire island.
