Justin Fashanu was the first famous sports star to come out. A professional British footballer (soccer player), Fashnau was the first to publicly identify himself as gay. Tabloid newspaper pressure resulted in him taking his own life in 1998 after spending all night in Chariots – a huge gay sauna in London. His brother, a well-known TV personality, said: “Justin was not gay, he was just an attention seeker.” Ouch!!
Swedish footballer Anton Hysén became the second sportsperson to come out publicly in 2011. Since then, many sports stars have come out very happily including Tom Daley (Olympic diver) and Gareth Thomas (rugby player and captain of Wales). There are rumours of a movie about Thomas’ life with the title role being played by Mickey Rourke, star of Iron Man 2.
